The T.J. Martell Foundation began with a promise. In 1975, T.J. Martell asked his father, music industry executive Tony Martell, to raise a million dollars for the lifesaving leukemia research that made it possible for T.J. to reach his twenty-first birthday, two years beyond his original prognosis.

T.J. died later that year, but Tony Martell, with a group of music industry executives, artists and friends, vowed to uphold that promise and organized several dinners and events.

Since then, the T.J. Martell Foundation has raised more than $215 million to support innovative research for leukemia, cancer and AIDS at eight laboratories throughout the United States.

With headquarters in New York, the T.J. Martell Foundation includes the Nashville division and the Bogart Pediatric Cancer Research Program in Los Angeles.

With the help of many generous sponsors and volunteers, the Foundation has exciting events including galas, auctions, golf tournaments, and other celebrity events throughout the year. Over the last 31 years, the Foundation has grown due to the hard work and generosity of the music industry. In recent years, support for the Foundation has extended to other industries as awareness of the work done by the T.J. Martell Foundation has spread.

Everyone is working together towards a common goal - to raise funds for innovative research into the treatments and cures of leukemia, cancer and AIDS - and to fulfill a father's promise.

Net profits from the sale of Between the Covers benefit the TJ Martell Foundation's ongoing research and treatment programs."Net Profits" are the monies the TJ Martell Foundation receives for sales of the CD from its wholesale distributors or record company licensees, less the Foundation's costs in creating, marketing, advertising and distributing the CD, including manufacturing costs, royalties, and certain other administrative and legal costs.

Your generous support makes a difference in people's lives and is very much appreciated.

An all-star lineup including Eric Clapton, Madonna, Alicia Keys, Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz, Mick Jagger and David Bowie, The Dixie Chicks, Sarah McLachlan and more are set to slip Between The Covers for the release of the benefit album to hit stores on Tuesday, September 12th.  Proceeds from the album, a compilation of covers of some of the greatest songs of this generation, will go to benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation, which supports cancer, leukemia, and AIDS research. VH1, VH1 Classic and Logo are also set to air a thirty-minute special in conjunction with the album’s release.

Created and produced by Paul Katz, Founder and CEO of Commit Media, the disc brings together for the first time thirteen inspired cover tracks of all-time classic songs by some of the music industry’s greatest songwriters and performers.

“I have learned over the years that when talented people who are in the public eye, like these musicians, come together for a greater good the end result is nothing short of amazing,”  said Katz.  “Entertainers can make people aware of a cause and inspire us to make a difference.”

Between The Covers, which is being released by SONY BMG in the U.S. and Nettwerk in Canada, features something for everyone. From Sheryl Crow’s hit rendition of “The First Cut Is The Deepest”, to Alicia Keys’ take on “If I Was Your Woman/Walk On By,” to Eric Clapton’s unforgettable unplugged version of “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out,” to the Dixie Chicks’ stirring version of “Landslide.” From Madonna’s hit remake of “American Pie,” to Norah Jones’ cover of “Cold, Cold Heart,” to Sarah McLachlan’s moving take on “Ol’ 55,” to Lenny Kravitz’ rockin’ version of “American Woman,” this album is a rare must-have compilation.
